Pamela Salisbury Gallery is pleased to present The Rhythm of Silence, an exhibition of new work by Ron Milewicz. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.  The artist will be present for an opening reception on Saturday, June 26, from 4-6 pm.

The recent oil paintings and graphite drawings included in this exhibition focus on the rural landscape of upstate New York. Trees, meadows, and ponds are the main representational features of these works, while silence and light are the primary subjects. Milewicz draws directly from life, and his black-and-white tonal drawings become the basis for similarly sized oil paintings. The modest size of the paintings occasions an intense experience of a private realm for both artist and viewer, while the restrained palette and subdued paint application distill a profound quiet.

Included in the exhibition are several long horizontal images. Combining small and large dimensions in a single work, the proportions of the format accommodate the intimate and the boundless simultaneously, giving viewers multiple pathways to travel through the wooded terrain of the landscapes. Time is built into the experience of the space of these paintings, constructing a complex visual narrative. These works engage far-ranging references, from ancient Chinese scroll painting to the American and European Romantic and plein air traditions.

Milewicz’s images bring to light the extraordinary value, both material and nonmaterial, present in his chosen bit of vulnerable nature. His venerable trees stand as silent witnesses to the vital forces that move through them and their ethereal settings.

Ron Milewicz was born in Brooklyn, New York. He received a BA from Cornell University in 1983 and a master’s degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture in 1986. He attended the New York Studio School (1990-1994), where he later taught drawing and painting. Milewicz has exhibited nationally and internationally, has been widely reviewed, and is represented in numerous private and public collections. Milewicz divides his time between New York City and Gallatin, New York.

The gallery is located at 362 1⁄2 Warren Street, Hudson, NY and is open Thursday through Monday, 11 AM — 6 PM.
